[Bleacher Nation] - I Love Hearing Tom Thibodeau Gush About Derrick Rose
Derrick Rose is coming home . Shortly after the Chicago Bulls legend announced his retirement earlier this year, the organization chose a date to celebrate. While it’s unclear exactly what the Bulls have planned for Rose and his family, we do know that the event is set for the first week of the new year when Chicago plays New York. The decision to hold Rose’s retirement party on the same day the Knicks are in town feels fitting. Not only did he spend the second-most seasons of his career with the franchise, but this will ensure Tom Thibodeau is in the building. Rose’s close relationship with the former Bulls head coach is well-documented. He suited up for Thibodeau in three different cities (Chicago, Minnesota, and New York), playing his best days alongside the well-respected leader. I’m sure if you asked Rose, a true celebration wouldn’t feel complete without Thibodeau in the building. © Winslow Townson-Imagn Images Thibodeau already sounds like he’s looking forward to the big night, too. Ahead of his matchup with his old team on Wednesday night, Thibodeau was asked about returning to the United Center later this season. He instantly expressed his excitement and touted the career of the Chicago native. “It’ll be great. I’m thrilled that they’re honoring him in that way. Jerry, and Michael Reinsdorf, their whole organization, I know what he means to that city. I know what the Bulls mean to him,” “He had a remarkable career. Just to see how he handled everything that came his way. You can talk about him as a basketball player, youngest MVP. No doubt in my mind a Hall of Famer. I saw the look in his opponent’s eyes, and I know what it says. Then, to navigate through all the things he had to go through and have the career he did. Great teammate, great person. I’m thrilled for him.” For the fans arguing for a jersey retirement or Hall of Fame nod, Thibodeau’s remarks say it all. The coach saw firsthand the fear Derrick Rose brought to his opponents, and this is a man who coached Kevin Garnett! Anyway, I’m sure we’ll hear a lot more from Tom Thibodeau – and many other familiar faces – on January 4. Save the date!
