Robert Powell Human biology and immunology graduate and father of four Robert Powell tells his story as part of November’s Mouth Cancer Action Month.
Rob's symptoms started as a persistent sore throat and happened soon after him ad his wife Susie moved to France to open a bed and breakfast. As he suffered with tonsilitis as a young child, he didn't think too much of it at the time, saying “In those days, they used to whip your tonsils out at the drop of a hat but despite having several bouts of tonsillitis, they left mine in. I just thought, I’ve got a sore throat and it’ll go away. I did the blokey thing and ignored it.”
It took Robert several months to accept that he needed help. He did eventually go to the GP for some antibiotics, but when the medication failed to ease the pain in the back of Robert’s mouth he decided to seek the advice of a dentist.
“One day, I was doing training at a dental practice and said, ‘would you mind taking a look...

David Withers David Withers from St Teath in Cornwall shares how his family have been getting on since they very sadly lost their dad to mouth cancer and the importance of being vigilant and aware of the signs and symptoms this Mouth Cancer Awareness Month.
"So my dad went for a routine dentist appointment just before the lockdown and then they noticed that he had some white spots on the roof of his mouth and the side of his mouth which they were a little bit concerned about so he went for various different biopsies and treatment only to discover at the very beginning of lockdown that he had mouth cancer.

"I think it's just nice to be able to share that story and keep his memory going it was a you know 18 months fight for him and ...

How to spot mouth cancer By spotting mouth cancer early, we have a much better chance of beating it.
During Mouth Cancer Action Month we are promoting the message ‘if in doubt, get checked out’. We encourage everybody to be mouthaware and pay close attention to what’s going on with their mouth.
Signs and symptoms of mouth cancer include:

Mouth ulcers that don't heal.
Red or white patches in the mouth.
Lumps and swellings in the mouth, head or neck.
A persistent sore throat.
Having pain or difficulty swallowing.
Speech problems.
Weight loss.
Bad breath.

If you notice anything out of the ordinary, make an appointment with your dentist or doctor to get it checked by a professional.
