6: May 1, 2024 In the last few days, my child – who is largely in charge of the music in our home – has been choosing Christmas albums from the 1960s. He sits in front of the record player – the one bought at a church rummage sale; also from the 60s – and listens so closely that he has been able to recite the words to me. Suddenly, it is the holidays. But not really. I spent the month of April swooning over the unfurling of pink blossoms on the ornamental Japanese Cherry tree in our backyard. It, too, is from the ...

5: April 13, 2024 This morning, I took my dog for a walk. A cacophony of breeds lies within her family tree, though she’s often mistaken for a Jack Russell Terrier; she’s also often assumed to be a boy, which I think is fascinating. I do not know what genders a dog.   The air was crisp and cool, bordering on cold, and it felt more like autumn than the rising tide of spring. Wet streets and sidewalks hinted at overnight rain, rain that I’d listened to from my soft and cozy bed before I’d risen with my child in the still-dark, early part of ...

The book – entitled “If You Come to Earth” by Sophie Blackall – has been a recent favorite for my little one and me. We read it a couple of times every day, pausing together to examine the gorgeous illustrations, talking about what’s happening in each picture.  I wasn’t sure what the 18-year-olds would think. I’m drawn to the story itself, which focuses on explaining how things work on this planet to someone who has never before visited. I’m drawn to the varied experiences that are ...

3: March 13, 2024 It is sometimes good to just do what you feel like, even if it’s something vaguely embarrassing: having a decaf espresso on a sunny afternoon, paying cash for a trashy book you don’t want to have tracked on your credit card. Desire, honoring desire, takes practice.

2: February 28, 2024 I would like to tell you about my little house, the writing studio that was once a shed. It is an indulgent backyard writing studio where, among other things, the small miracle is this: I write.  I recently put a new bookshelf in here, along with a secondhand loveseat, and now it feels like this room is almost complete, save for fully decorating it, save for hanging more pictures on the wall and weeding through the filing cabinet full of things I no longer need. This space is full of things that I love. Here are some of them:  An ...
