13: October 26, 2025 Today I received the fastest rejection I’ve ever gotten for a piece of writing: two hours and forty-one minutes. I’d sent it off with a sense of hope, in the wake of a rejection that stung, thinking of myself as getting back on the proverbial literary horse. It’s a piece of writing that I like, one that I’m proud of. One that my writing partner said really stood out to her. Still, it searches for a home. This is how much of the year has gone. I’ve submitted more work to more places than I ever have before. And I ...

14: November 13, 2025 It is the type of morning that howls. Dark still, but so forceful. When I was in college, I lived on the 8th floor of a high rise building. The wind up there was something stunning; I worried about blowing over, though our walls were made of cinderblock. That fall,  I couldn’t eat enough oranges. I craved them constantly, sometimes eating several a day. I’d sit in my room, listening to the wind, gearing my wits up about me so that I could make the walk to the next quad for those oranges. I learned to peel them quickly, separating ...

11: September 7, 2025 This morning, we rode our bikes downtown for donuts and coffee. We rode our bikes downtown and then I went for such a small run, since I’m not a runner anymore, followed by a walk, because the dogs needed to go out. The world was beautiful: clean air, blue sky, geese flying intermittently overhead. I chose a chocolate donut and didn’t eat it all. It was delicious but I wanted to balance presence and mindfulness, and donuts have never really been my weakness. That designation belongs to salsa and tortilla chips, or trail mix. Chocolate mousse or homemade butterscotch pudding. ...

10: August 31, 2025 Shamelessly posting because it’s the last day of the month and I haven’t yet. I spent August: worried about the state of the world, loving on my child, loving on my partner, soaking up the hydrangeas, soaking up the sun. Cheering for the opponents. Dreaming of the wild.
