Windblown dust from land boosts productivity in the Southern Ocean Using a fleet of ocean robots, researchers have found that windblown iron-rich dust from land fertilises around a third of phytoplankton growth in the Southern Ocean. This finding sheds light on the vital role that dust-fuelled productivity plays in the ocean's capacity to absorb and store carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
