Vancouver Canucks spend $61.5M on new contracts for Demko and Garland
The Vancouver Canucks kicked off Canada Day with two big contract extensions.
After plenty of speculation, the Canucks made it official on Tuesday morning that both Thatcher Demko and Conor Garland will stay in Vancouver, signing a pair of multi-year deals.
Both contracts will begin at the start of the 2026-27 NHL season.
There were rumours that Canucks GM Patrik Allvin would test the trade market on Demko going into the offseason. The San Diego native has been struggling through injury issues but is now fully healthy, per CHEK’s Rick Dhaliwal.
Instead, Demko inked a three-year extension with the Canucks that carries a cap hit of $8.5 million, making him the third-highest-paid goalie in the NHL for 2026-27. The contract includes a no-movement clause, per Dhaliwal.

“Thatcher is one of the top goalies in the National Hockey League and a key leader in our locker room,” said Allvin. “His desire to continue his career in Vancouver says a lot about what we are trying to accomplish and where this organization is headed.
“Demmer is one of the hardest working players on our team and gives our group great confidence when he takes the net. A complete package of size, strength, rebound control, and athletic ability, our players know that they have an opportunity to win each and every game he plays.”
Garland, meanwhile signed a six-year contract that carries a cap hit of $6 million. The 29-year-old scored 19 goals and 50 points through 81 games last season and was among the team’s most consistent scorers.
“Conor is a core member of our hockey team and a player who has taken on a bigger role with the club the past couple seasons,” said Allvin. “His commitment to us by signing this deal shows how confident he is in our organization’s vision and direction.
“He competes hard every day, drives play on the ice, is relentless on the forecheck and is really tough to play against. Gars is an emerging leader in the group and works extremely hard to keep himself and the players around him accountable.”
With these contracts kicking in next year, it doesn’t impact the amount of cap space the Canucks have to spend in free agency this summer. That number remains just above $7 million per PuckPedia, with discussions to bring back Pius Suter ongoing and Brock Boeser most likely signing elsewhere.
Getting Garland and Demko locked up is a tidy piece of business to star the day, but we will have to wait and see what else the Canucks have up their sleeve. NHL free agency opens at 9 am PT.
