WTO members hold first formal meeting on dispute settlement reform WTO members met at Heads of Delegation level on 30 May for their first formal meeting on dispute settlement reform, with an initial focus on how to resolve issues regarding appeal/review and accessibility. The facilitator of the process, Ambassador Usha Dwarka-Canabady of Mauritius, said the discussions revealed a “strong appreciation for the dispute settlement system overall” as a core element of the WTO system.

New WTO publication highlights strategies to tackle illicit trade in food and food fraud A new WTO publication launched on 28 May looks into the challenges of combating illicit trade in food and food fraud and discusses the role the WTO could play in helping to address this issue. At the launch event, leaders from business and international organizations and other trade experts discussed the urgent need for the international community to act collectively and explored strategies for overcoming current challenges.

Call for research papers on innovation now open for World Trade Congress on Gender 2025 The call for research papers has opened for the second World Trade Congress on Gender, to be held at the WTO on 24-27 June 2025, under the theme “Gender Equality and Innovation — the Keys to Sustainable Trade”. Jointly organized by the WTO, the WTO Gender Research Hub and UN Women, the second Congress aims to present research exploring the intricate connections between gender equality, innovation and trade.

Items proposed for consideration at the next meeting of Dispute Settlement Body The WTO Secretariat has circulated a meeting notice and list of items proposed for the next meeting, on 24 May 2024, of the Dispute Settlement Body, which consists of all WTO members and oversees legal disputes among them. The meeting notice is circulated in the form of a document officially called an “airgram”.

Mauritius formally accepts Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies Mauritius deposited its instrument of acceptance of the Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies on 13 May, advancing the tally of formal acceptances to 75. Ambassador Usha Chandnee Dwarka-Canabady presented Mauritius’s instrument of acceptance to Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.
